From Tracie: "My name is Tracie Kiernan and I am an acrylic painter, art educator and mom! I created a website called “Step By Step Painting” where I teach beginners how to paint. I love sharing my painting tutorials and inspiring people all around the world to paint things they thought they never could.

I’ve used Royal & Langnickel products for years and love recommending the paint brushes to my students. I appreciate that Royal & Langnickel has so many options for brushes. There’s brushes in every size, material, firmness level and even some fun colors and soft grips. The quality of the brushes also stand the test of time as I use them frequently!"

Q: When and how did you start out as an artist?

A: I’ve been creating art for as long as I could remember, and I’ve always considered myself an artist. In my college years I started getting serious about being an artist and decided I wanted to be an Elementary Art Teacher. What really sparked my interest was learning about all the concepts like color theory, art history and design (you know, that “art nerd” stuff)! After college, I taught Elementary Art for seven years and loved teaching kids! Then after becoming a stay at home mom, I redefined my art career into the online world.

Q: Who are some artists that inspired your work?

A: Bob Ross! I used to paint along with him when I was a child. His simplicity and teaching style helped shape the way I understand and teach painting. Also, Leonid Afremov! I love the way he depicts colors, reflections and light into his palette knife oil paintings. Finally, Professor and Artist Leandro Soto! I had the privilege of learning under his exceptional instruction in college. He is what made me so interested in becoming an Art Teacher!

Q: What is your dream project?

A: I would like to open my own art studio! I love teaching art to all ages so it would not only be for adults but kids as well! I also have a special place in my heart for children with special needs and would want to create an art and painting workshop specifically for them.

Q: What's your preferred medium to work with?

A: Acrylic paint! It’s such a flexible and forgiving medium. I also enjoy oil pastels and color pencil.

Q: What themes do you pursue?

A: Colorful, whimsical and happy themes! Nature, rustic and outdoor themes too! I love reflections and light and LOVE painting the moon! Also, on my website I try to depict trending themes and simple designs that I know my students will find success in painting.

Q: Can you describe your creative process?

A: Every painting that I do starts with an idea in my mind and the goal is to try to replicate it on canvas. Most of the time it takes MANY sketches and rough drafts to finally execute the idea. If I’m creating a painting for my website, I’m also thinking “how am I going to teach this design?” I have to think in terms of “step by step” processes that would be easy for a beginner to understand.

Q: Have you always wanted to turn your creative passion into a career? What made you go for it?

A: Yes! I’ve always wanted to be an artist as my career! I don’t know exactly what made me “go for it.” I did have a lot of great professors in college that encouraged and inspired me to become an Art Teacher!

Q: What one piece of advice would you offer to an artist just starting out?

A: Try out different mediums! Other mediums help you learn techniques from a different perspective. For example, I once took a Sumi-E class and that helped me learn different brush stroke techniques. I also dabble around with oil pastels so that I can learn about layering colors over one another. Color pencils help me understand blending on a different level. Don’t be afraid to broaden your horizon with different materials!

Q: What are some of your favorite Royal & Langnickel brushes/products and how do you use them?

A: I like the Royal White Taklon™ brushes and any of the taklon synthetic brushes! I love to use synthetic brushes because they are durable with acrylics, have the right firmness level and clean easily!

Q: Professionally, what’s your goal?

A: My goal is to continue to improve my painting skills and the ability to teach and inspire others in new and improved ways over the internet! I LOVE what I do online with my website and through the use of social media. I enjoy meeting people all around the world and inspiring others to discover painting. I will continue doing this for as long as this ship sails!
